MORE PLASTIC THAN FISH
"There will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by 2050": this was the stark warning from the World Economic Forum in 2016.
Have we taken steps to prevent this?
Since 2016, there have been limited bans on selected single-use plastics, such as bags and straws, but a quick visit to any supermarket will tell you that there is still a long way to go.
In 2017, 193 countries signed a non-binding UN resolution to eliminate plastic pollution in the sea. Under the resolution, countries agreed to start monitoring the amount of plastic they dump into the ocean and explore ways to make it illegal to dump waste into the seas.
There is still much more we can do
Plastic use has increased 20-fold in the last 50 years and is expected to double again in the next 20 years. If we want to prevent the world's oceans from becoming a lifeless dumping ground, we will need governments around the world to get tough and pass laws banning single-use plastics.
